Goal One: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Target One: Reduce by half the proportion
of people living on less than one dollar a day by 2015
Will this target be reached by 2015?

Although Yemen has witnessed an average annual growth rate of
around 5 percent since the 1990s, this has not been enough to
halve poverty by 2015.
Assuming existing disparities in per capita income
persist, the Yemeni economy needs to grow by approximately 8 percent
per year in order to reach this goal. To increase the economic
growth rate higher levels of investment and savings are needed,
as well as intensive efforts to attract Foreign Direct Investments
(FDIs).
Target Two: Reduce by half the proportion
of people who suffer from hunger by 2015
Will this target be reached by 2015?
Despite achievements in the field of health nutrition,
Yemen still falls below the level needed to fulfil this goal.
Contributing factors include the high population
growth rate; low per capita income; the rise in inflation; and
the allocation of vast amounts of productive land for growing
Qat (a stimulant with no nutritional value).

Did you know?
Hunger continues to be a global tragedy. Its
elimination requires a concerted and persistent worldwide effort.
The Millennium Project Task Force on Hunger is convinced that
hunger can be halved by 2015. Indeed, the task force will not
be satisfied with the attainment of that goal; it sees reaching
the hunger MDG as a milestone in the global effort to eradicate
hunger.
