MDG Progress in Yemen

Goal Four: Reduce child mortality

Target One: Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than one dollar a day by 2015
Will this target be met by 2015?

Census information indicates that the under five mortality rate has dropped from 105 deaths per 1,000 live births to 82 in 2004. Although this represents significant progress, Yemen remains off target to achieve this goal

If Yemen is to reduce the under five mortality rate by the amount required to achieve this MDG significant challenges must be addressed. These include:

• Poor quality of health services;
• Income and poverty;
• Low levels of public expenditure;
• Poor access to clean water and sanitation;
• Poor access to maternal health; and
• Low usage of primary health care in rural areas.

Did you know?

Eleven million children below age five still die every year from preventable causes – about 30.000 a day. If worldwide trends continue through 2015, the reduction in mortality among children under five will be about one quarter, far from the target of a two thirds reduction.
