Goal Six: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases
Target One: Halt and begin to reverse
the spread of HIV/AIDS
Will this target be reached by 2015?

So far the pandemic of Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome (AIDS) is not widely spread in Yemen. However, official
data indicates an increasing number of HIV/AIDS cases.
In its efforts to halt the spread of HIV/AIDS
the Government of Yemen is facing a number of challenges, including:
Scarcity of financial resources;
Lack of awareness about the seriousness of HIV/AIDS and the
means of transmission and prevention;
Weak institutional capacity to tackle HIV/AIDS;
Insufficient monitoring and surveillance of blood donations
and transfusions; and
Stigmatisation at all levels.
Target Two: Halt and begin to reverse
the incidence of malaria and other major diseases
Will this target be reached by 2015?

Yemen is a country with high incidence rates of malaria and tuberculosis
(TB). However, recent efforts have shown promising signs that
malaria and TB may be being brought under control. For instance
in 2004 there were 155,826 fewer reported cases of malaria than
2002.
Nevertheless, a concerted effort is still required
to reverse the incidence of malaria, TB and other major diseases.
