MDG Progress in Yemen

Goal Seven: Ensure environmental sustainability

Target One: Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes; reverse loss of environmental resources

Will this goal be reached by 2015?

Yemen is facing enormous environmental problems. Although the Government of Yemen has taken steps towards tackling these issues, much more needs to be done.

Efforts to overcome these problems must meet the following challenges:
• Reduce poverty;
• Implement and enforce strong environmental protection laws;
• Encourage stakeholders participation in the management of natural resources;
• Enforce the principle of ‘violator pays’ in relation to the environment;
• Promote environmental awareness; and
• Manage environmental information.

Target Two: Reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water

Will this goal be reached by 2015?

Yemen is facing a severe water crisis which is hindering access to safe drinking water. Overcoming water issues will require an enormous effort. In light of this it will be very difficult for Yemen to ensure this MDG is achieved.
