Project Title: Enhancing Women’s Political Participation in Electoral Processes

Brief Description:
The Project aims to empower women's participation in political life through capacity building of women candidates and women voters on electoral process and advocacy activities to create enabling environment for women's political participation.


Objectives:
In line with the National strategy for women's development (2006 -2015), the project seeks to promote equal participation of women in the electoral process as well as in political life. The main objective of the project is to support and enhance the effort towards female political participation already initiated by the previous UNDP project ‘Electoral Support for the Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum’ conducted in 2004-2006. Furthermore, it aims to identify and test the effective approaches in field of electoral empowerment to be used while formulating and implementing the upcoming UNDP support project starting in 2008.

Key Activities:

  • Training of Trainers for SCER Women's Unit;
  • Conduct training workshops for women running for candidacy in Sana'a, Dhamar, Al-Mahwit, Lahj and Abyan;
  • Edit, print and disseminate training manual;
  • Conduct a networking workshop for women politicians;
  • Provide documentation equipment for SCER Women's Unit;
  • Conduct a baseline socio-cultural study on perceptions and attitudes towards women’s political participation;
  • Facilitate a national symposium on women’s political empowerment;
  • Conduct media campaigns encouraging women’s political participation;
  • Support theatre performances in six governorates; and
  • Conduct a post-project impact assessment.

Evaluation: The project will be subject to the standard UNDP review, monitoring and evaluation guidelines.
