Responding to HIV/AIDS

With a little over 2,000 cases reported until the middle of 2007, Yemen is considered as a low prevalence country with respect to HIV and AIDS. However, it is likely that this low rate hides a much grimmer reality, given the fact that many cases go unreported due to the social stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS and the lack of institutional mechanisms and basic infrastructure to detect them.

To raise awareness of the potential risks, HIV and AIDS issues must be addressed immediately. UNDP in collaboration with other organizations is contributing to the development of the National AIDS Programme (NAP), which has been commissioned to establish a holistic approach to prevent the spread the disease.
