Brief Description:
The aim of the project is to enhance the Government's capacity to respond to the HIV/AIDS challenge in Yemen.

Objectives:

  • Build institutional capacity to plan and implement multi-sectoral strategies to limit and reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and mitigate its negative social and economic impacts;
  • Mainstream HIV/AIDS issues in national policies and strategies;
  • Review HIV/AIDS and human rights related legislation and policies; and
  • Enhance the capacity of the National Aids Programme to deal with HIV/AIDS at the governmental level.

Key Activities:

  • Undertake awareness raising activities targeting the general population as well as high-risk and vulnerable groups;
  • Undertake advocacy activities targeting leaders and the general public to address HIV/AIDS in general as well as the human rights of people living with HIV/AIDS (i.e. care and support)
  • Provide equipment for the National Aids Programme, and conduct management training regarding HIV/AIDS issues. For example counselling; and
  • Facilitate the participation of the National Aids Programme in the formulation of the Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSP).

Key Achievements:

  • Conducted a number of sensitization workshops targeting the general public;
  • Designated and trained HIV/AIDS focal points for each site;
  • Reviewed national laws and drafted new law for people living with HIV;
  • Conducted behavioural studies among marginalised groups in Taiz and Hudayda and established a network among these groups; and
  • Conducted public advocacy mass media activities (printing material).
